Schneider is new superintendent at Lake Norman State Park

RALEIGH -- Greg Schneider, a veteran ranger and park superintendent, has been named superintendent of Lake Norman State Park in Iredell County, according to the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation. Schneider succeeds Casey Rhinehart, who passed away earlier this year.

A superintendent is the chief of operations and administration at a state park or state recreation area with wide-ranging responsibilities for staffing, training, law enforcement, visitor services, natural resource protection, community outreach and environmental education.

Schneider is a Florida native who grew up in Iredell County and graduated from Wingate College in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After working as a seasonal employee, he served as a park ranger at Jordan Lake and Fort Fisher state recreation areas and Eno River State Park, as park superintendent at Fort Fisher, Jordan Lake and Jones Lake and Morrow Mountain state parks, and as a district superintendent and chief of operations.

He is certified in environmental education and advanced law enforcement, served as the division’s first certified law enforcement firearms instructor and has received the division’s Special Achievement and Distinguished Service awards.

“Greg is a true veteran of the state parks system, with deep experience and a strong commitment to the mission of this division,” said Mike Murphy, state parks director. “He knows the Lake Norman region well, and his competence at building close community ties will enhance the growth and development of the state park.”

Lake Norman State Park was established in 1962, encompasses 1,923 acres and opened a new visitor center and related facilities in April. The park recorded 551,081 visitors in 2014.
