Join us as a member of Morrow Mountain State Park's Friends Group leads a brisk hike along Sugarloaf Mountain Trail. We will ascend the park's second highest peak, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside during winter months. This rugged trail covers approximately 2.8 miles and will take approximately one and a half hours to complete.
This trail is rugged, rocky and steep in places. Hiking boots or shoes, water and snacks are highly recommended. Dress appropriately for the weather, which can vary greatly at this time of year. Meet at the parking lot for the Sugarloaf Mountain Trailhead (also the parking lot for the Bridle Trailhead) at 10:00 a.m. This hike will be cancelled in the event of rain. For more information contact park staff at 704-982-4402.
Please plan to join us for the annual First Day Hike on Friday, January 1 at Morrow Mountain State Park, starting at 10 a.m. Sugarloaf Trail will be the objective; the hike will begin and end at the Horse Trailer Parking Lot. Sugarloaf Trail is fairly strenuous and takes almost an hour for those who don’t stop to smell the roses. Please plan to join old and new friends, including campers at the park, members of Friends of Morrow Mountain State Park and members of the LandTrust for Central North Carolina. All are welcome! For more information, contact Ken Knight at kbknight17@gmail.com or 704.982.8260.
This guided hike will cover the park's Quarry Trail, which is approximately 0.6 mile long, covers easy terrain and is appropriate for all ages. We will visit the site used by the Civilian Conservation Corps to quarry stone used in the construction of many of the park's buildings and facilities. We will discuss unique natural and cultural features of the park along the way.
Dress for the weather and wear footwear appropriate for hiking. Meet at the Quarry Trailhead (at picnic area below the pool) at 2:00 p.m. for this short walk which will take approximately one hour. This hike will be cancelled in the event of rain. For further information call park staff at 704-982-4402.
