On Thursday March 14th at 6:30 in the Lodge there was a History Committee meeting and twelve members attended.
Park Ranger, Ron Anundson presented his important GPS location work on cultural and historical sites in the park. Ron along with others have worked for a long time to identify most of the key park sites. However, as Robert Stoker pointed out during the meeting, there are still questions about several site locations like the exact location of the Salisbury/Fayetteville Rd., Dicksville School, etc.
Ron provided two maps with specific location numbers all around the park. The location numbers refer to house sites, school sites, old community sites, grave yards, church sites, CCC Camp, etc., etc. in the park that additionally refer to a detailed (multiple pages) map key. The map key identified the site names and the GPS coordinates.
People were urged to review Ron's maps and map key and provide more, different, corrective or better information about specific sites. Anyone with key information will hopefully touch base with Ron.
Jeff Michael's presentation about his detailed knowledge of the park's cultural and historical sites on Sunday, Oct. 20th from 2:00 until 4:00 at the Lodge at MMSP was discussed. Everyone will help spread the word. It should be a major event for FMMSP and help establish new memberships.
Ron's GPS location work along with a helpful critique and possible re-location of his sites from others over the next several months should be of help to Jeff at his Oct. presentation. Jeff may be able to use some of the Urban Institute's resources to create a more polished site location map (as well as a digital/computer version) after Ron's maps are sufficiently critiqued by others.
The next History Committee meeting is scheduled for May 9th at 6:30 pm at the Lodge. The second Thursday of every other month at 6:30 pm will be the regular meeting time.
At the next meeting Farrell Thomas, who worked at the CCC Camp back behind the Kron House, will hopefully speak in person or via video about his experiences and memories of the CCC Camp at Morrow Mt.
