FM Chumachenko Goes 3-0 To Grab Quark 9 Title

FM Andrey Chumachenko rolled up three straight wins to grab the Top Section at Quark 9 Dec. 27 at the Mint Hill Library near Charlotte. Chumachenko took home $100 for his efforts. Keith Eubanks was clear second at 2.5/3.0 and won $50. In the Lower Section, Winfred Gatlin posted a perfect 3-0 mark to grab first place and $50. Chad Moody was clear second at 2.5/3.0 to take home $25. A total of 15 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Thirty Players Participate At Raleigh Russian School Quads

A total of 30 players participated in the Raleigh Russian School Scholastic Quads Dec. 20. Winning their sections: Daniel Su, 3-0; Cheri Agner, 2.5/3.0; Martin Riedel 2.5/3.0; Dani Chertok, 3-0; Siddarth Moorthy  and Andrew Felter at 2-1; Shantam Bhat 2.5/3.0 and Akshay Pramod at 5-0. Sam Ferguson Ties for First At K-12 National Championships

Cary�s Sam Ferguson posted a stellar 6-1 mark to tie for first place in the second grade section of the National K-12 Championships Dec. 12-14 in Orlando, Fla. Ferguson attends Morrisville Elementary. Check out the crosstable.

FM Ron Simpson Grabs Third TACO In A Row

FM Ron Simpson captured his third TACO in a row with another perfect score of 4-0 to win TACO 46 Dec. 13 in Raleigh.  Simpson won $150 for the performance.  NM Alan Patrick finished second with a 3-1 score and took home $75. In the Advanced Section,  Mike Ebhardinger won the section with a 3.5/0.5  score and took home $110. In the Intermediate Section, John A. Lanze won the section also with a 3.5/0.5 score and earned $105. A total of 28 players participated in the action. Check out the crosstable.

Samuel Xin Takes K-12 Section At Southern Scholastic

More than 300 players competed over the weekend at the 21^st Southern Scholastic Dec. 13-14 in Charlotte. In the K-12 Section, Samuel Xin went a perfect 5-0 to grab first place. In the K-8 Section, JP Flynn also went 5-0 to grab sole first.

In the K-5 Section, Ken Chu posted a perfect 5-0 mark to take sole first place. In the K-3 Section, Alan Xie and Scott Hallyburton both went 5-0 to share the top spot. Xie placed first at tiebreaks. Check out the crosstables.

Xin, Fuerstman Share Top Spot At Quark 8

Scholastic player Samuel Xin and NM Leland Fuerstman both posted two wins and a draw in G/75 to share the top spot at the Quark 8 Nov. 29 in Mint Hill. Both players took home $60. A total of eight competitors participated. Check out the crosstable.

Big Crowd Shows Up At DA's Fall Challenge

A total of 142 players participated in the Durham Academy Fall Challenge Nov. 22. In the Open Section, James Novak posted a 3-0 score to grab first place. In the K-12 Under 1400 Section, Dane Simon went a perfect 4-0 for the top spot. In the K-12 Under 1000 Section, Rakayat Nuruddin was a prefect 4-0 for first place.

In the K-6 Section, Rishi Sundaresan, James Lapidus and Edwin Lin all went 4-0 to tie for the top spot. In the K-3 Section, Zachary Hunter and Robert Hellinga were 5-0 for first place. In the Anada Bhatt was 3.5/4.0 for first place. Check out the crosstable.

Mabe Shines Bright At Reverse Angle At UNC Charlotte

A big turnout of 58 players participated in the Reverse Angle 11 Nov. 22 at UNC Charlotte. In the Open Section, NM Chris Mabe had the winning form to capture first place. In the Under 1800 Section, Jessica Martin and Fabio Hurtado tied for the top spot. In the Under 1400 Section,  Lendel Robinson, Kevin Blackwell, and Drew Holloway all shared the top spot. Baldwin Looks Strong In 3-0 Finish In Mayberry

Scott Baldwin continued his domination of play at the Mayberry tournaments as he posted a 3-0 score to capture the event Nov. 22 in Mount Airy. Check out the crosstable.

FM Ron Simpson Keeps Winning Streak Going At TACO 45

FM Ronald Simpson continued his winning ways as he took the Open section with a 4-0 score at the TACO 45 Nov. 22 in Raleigh. Steven Pizzo managed to win the Advanced Section with a 3.5/4 score. Both players won $125 for their performances. A total of 22 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Large Crowd Turns Out For CMSCA Junior Open

More than 200 players participated in the CMSCA Junior Open Nov. 15 in Charlotte. There were plenty of ties to go around after three rounds � although Zachary Templeton was the sole winner at 3-0 in the 18 and Under Section. The 21 and Under Section was shared by Chang Sun and Michael Lauria. In the 16 and Under Section, Robin Yopp and J.P. Flynn shared the top spot at 3-0.

Numerous players went 3-0 in the 12 and Under Section: Jordan Ware, Justin Gonzalez, Justin Yang, Shouri Gottiparthi and Nicole Spencer. The was also a logjam with 3-0 in the 10 and Under Section: Daneil Lee, Joshua Holcombe Cameron Edwin Lee, Jay Pakala, Avery Feagans and Rui Wu. The 6 and Under Section saw plenty of players go 3-0: Shivansh Tomar, Shahil Patel, Kasimir Schulz, William Flynn, Alan Xie, Emery Tran and Liam Roeth. Check out the full crosstable.

Players Turn Out For Durham Academy's Master Trek 14

FM Ron Simpson gave the scholastic players some tough competition at the Durham Academy Master Trek 14 Nov. 8. Salil Saxena scored 2.5/3.0 to be the top scholastic player in the Top Section. Winning their 8-player sections: Indira Puri, Hans Wu Singh, Ryan George Smith and Andrew William Felter. Almost 50 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

FM Ron Simpson Claims Title As State Champion at N.C. Open

FM Ron Simpson posted a 4.0/5.0 in the Open Section to finish as the top state player and claim the title as State Champion at the N.C. Open Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 in Greensboro. Simpson is also the reigning co-champion of the N.C. Invitational.

NM Timur Aliyev of South Carolina was the overall Open winner with a 4.5/5.0 score. He took home $458 for his efforts. Simpson won $327. Other prize winners in the Open section were: Gary Newsom, NM Maurice Dana, and Matthew Marsh at 3.5/5.0. They all won $229.

Jacob Parrish won $425 and the Under 2200 Section with a 4.0/5.0 score. Lev Zilberter won $425 and the Under 2000 Section with a 4.5/5.0 score. David Stamper and Stephen Wang tied for first in the Under 1800 Section at 4.5/5.0. They each won $329. Antonio Sobremisana won $425 and the Under 1600 section with a perfect 5-0 score.

Philip Miller won $425 and the Under 1400 Section with a 4.5/5.0 score. Marc Roach won the Unrated Section at 5-0. Indira Puri won the N.C. Open Scholastic with a 4-0 score. A total of 148 players participated. A total purse of $6,550 was given out; 66 percent of the total entry fees. Check out all of the crosstables.

FM Simpson, Pizzo Claim Sections At TACO 44

FM Ron Simpson reeled off four straight wins to claim first place in the Open Section at the Triangle Area Chess Open (TACO) 44 Oct. 11 in Raleigh. Alexei Gorbounov was clear second at 3.0/4.0. In the Advanced Section, Steven Pizzo took the top spot at 3.5/4.0. Emil Mayev and Antonio Sobremisana finished tied for second. A total of 25 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Logjam For First At Triangle Area Scholastic Quad

A total of 16 players made four quads at the Triangle Area Chess Scholastic Quads Oct. 11 in Raleigh. In the Championship Section, there was a logjam with Andrew Yuan, Ivan Kuznetsov and Daniel Su all scoring 2.0/3.0. Sam Ferguson went 3-0 to capture the second quad; Anand Bhatt and Adrian Gellert both went 2.0/3.0 in the third quad and Ryan White reeled off six wins to take the final quad. Chen, Cowgill Go 4-0 To Claim Sections In Winston-Salem

Kevin Chen reeled off four straight wins to capture the K-12 Section of the Winston-Salem Scholastic Chess Association�s Fall 7 Oct. 4. In the K-8 Section, Ben Cowgill went a perfect 4-0 to claim the top spot. A total of 27 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

NM Mabe, Myers Claim Top Spots At Reverse Angle

NM Chris Mabe and Dominique Myers both went 3-0 to claim a share of the Open Section at the Reverse Angle 10 Sept. 20 at UNC Charlotte. In the Under 1800 Section, UNCC student David Stamper post a 2.5/3.0 score to grab sole first place. In the Under 1400 Section, Charles Carerros and Jordan Eliseo both were perfect at 3-0 to share the top spot. A total of 46 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

NM Craig Jones Brings Home The Big TACO Prize

NM Craig Jones posted a 3.5/4 score to grab first place at the Triangle Area Chess Open (TACO) 43 in Raleigh Sept. 13. Jones won $160 for the performance. FM Ron Simpson finished second and won $80 with a 3.0/4.0 score. In the Advanced Section, Emil Mayev overcame the odds and won with a 3.5/4.0 score and won $125. In the Intermediate Section, there was a four-way tie with Frank Jackson, John Lanze, Jordan Eliseo, and Antonio Sobremisana all tied for first with a 3.0/4.0 score. Each player won $44. Lawson Goes Undefeated For Asheboro Open Crown

Josh Lawson laid down the law as he ripped off three straight wins to capture the Championship Section of the Asheboro Open 40 Sept. 6. Lawson walked away with $135 for his efforts. Joshua Taylor was clear second at 2.5/3.0 In the Candidates Section, Victor Beaman and Zachary High tied for first at 2.5/3.0. Each player won $97 for his efforts. NM Chris Mabe reeled off three wins to grab the Open Section of the Fake Copper Blanket Sept. 6 in Charlotte. Mabe won $100 for his efforts. In the Under 1800 Section, David Stamper went a perfect 3-0 to capture first place. In the Under 1400 Section, Seth Taylor-Brill posted a 2.5/3.0 mark to claim the top spot.  

In the Under 1200 Section, Jonathan Chen was a clean 3-0 to grab first place. In the Under 1000 Section, David Stewart was a perfect 4-0 to grab sole first place. A total of 81 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Balleisen Doesn�t Let Rating Stop Him In Durham

Aaron Balleisen fought through a field of higher-rated players to post a perfect 3-0 score and grab the Open Section of the Durham Academy Master Trek 11 Aug. 23. Winners in other eight-players sections were: Indira Puri, Joseph Swan and Elias Tymas. Spencer Hallyburton and Michael An tied at 2.5/3.0 in their section. A total of 43 players participated. Shah Wins Top Quad At Russian School Event

A total of 26 players competed in the Raleigh Russian School Quads Aug. 16. Winning their quads were: Nishanth Shah at 2.5/3.0; Ivan Kuznetsov at 3-0; Sam Ferguson at 2.5/3.0; Martin Riedel & Arkady Bilenkin at 2-1 and Andrew Yuan at 5-0. Check out the crosstable.

NM Jones Tops Tough Field At TACO 42 In Raleigh

NM Craig Jones posted a 3.5/4.0 score to grab the Top Section and $165 at the Triangle Area Chess Open 42 (TACO) Aug. 10 in Raleigh. Five masters played in the field. In the Advanced Section, Victor Beaman, Eric Noden, and Larry Williams ended in a three-way tie at 3.0/4.0. Each player received $79. In the Intermediate Section, Ralph Hunt and Han Vo tied for first at 3.5/4.0. Each player took home $98. A total of 40 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

NM Chris Mabe and South Carolina�s Wayne Christensen both posted 2.5/3.0 scores in the Open Section to share first place at the Reverse Angle 9 Aug. 9 at UNC Charlotte. In the Under 1800 Section, there was a logjam with Jonathan Hudson, David Spencer and Tom Hales all going 2.5/3.0 to grab a share of first place. In the Under 1400 Section, Charles Yopp and Charles Carerros both went a perfect 3-0 to tie for first place. A total of 39 players participated in the action. Check out the crosstable.

McNeill Carries The State Banner At Denker Tournament Of Champions

North Carolina K-12 scholastic champion Jonathan McNeill scored 2.5/6.0 in an elite field of the nation�s top players at the Denker Tournament of High School Champions Aug. 2-5 in Dallas. McNeill earned the right to represent the state by winning the K-12 section at the State Scholastic in February in Charlotte. Check out the crosstable. Also check out some of his games.

Mabe, Holmes Go 3-0 To Share Asheboro Crown

NM Chris Mabe and Adam Holmes

A total of 45 players jammed the Asheboro Open Aug. 2. In the Championship Section, NM Chris Mabe and Adam Holmes both stormed to 3-0 marks to share first place and garner $141 for their efforts. Holmes turned in a solid upset of FM Ron Simpson along the way.

In the Candidates Section, Andrew Dejong, Haoquing Wang and Joshua Taylor were logjammed at 2.5/3.0 and each got $94. In the Club Section, Grace Campbell continued her winning ways as she rolled up a 3-0 mark and took home $185. Check out the crosstable.

Wheeless Finishes Well At Polgar National Invitational For Girls

Charlotte�s Amelia Wheeless posted 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws to tie for seventh at the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls in Lubbock, Texas, July 27 through Aug. 1. Wheeless placed ninth on tiebreaks in the event, which brings together the best scholastic female players in the nation. Crosstable coming soon. Wheeless earned the right to represent North Carolina by winning the N.C. All Girls Open in April in Matthews. This was her third time representing North Carolina. Wheeless also won the Top Section at the event�s warm-up quads on July 26. Check out that crosstable. Wheeless will be a freshman at UNC Charlotte this fall.

Players From All Over Compete In 35^th LPO

More than 160 players competed in the 2008 LPO July 25-27 in Winston-Salem. In the Open Section, NM Timur Aliyev from South Carolina claimed clear first with a 4-1 score. In the Under 2200 Section, Georgia�s Ryan Joseph Moon topped the field with a 4-1 score. In the Under 2000 Section, Gary Branton, Alexei Gorbounov and Jonathon McNeill all went 4-1 to share the top spot. 

In the Under 1800 Section, Michael Lipkin, Jordan Wood, Neil Jarrett and South Carolina�s Beth Pierce all went 4-1 to tie for first. In the Under 1600 Section, Elliot Cartee was a perfect 5-0 to claim the top prize. In the Under 1400 Section, Kentucky�s John Sefton had four wins and a draw to take clear first. Leonard Singleton started off his tournament career right going 5-0 to claim the Unrated Section. Check out the crosstable.

Holmes Leads Undefeated Winners At Durham Academy Master Trek

Adam Holmes reeled off three straight wins to capture the Top Section of the Durham Academy Master Trek 10 July 12. Other undefeated section winners: Gabriel Gloss, Aidan Burdick and Han Duy Vo. A total of 39 players participated. Check out the crosstable. 

NM Nelson Lopez II Devours The TACO Field

University of Texas-Dallas student NM Nelson Lopez II, reeled off three wins and a draw to capture top prize in the Open Section of the Triangle Area Chess Open (TACO) July 12 in Raleigh. In the Advanced Section, Joshua Taylor also posted three wins and a draw to claim first place. A total of 27 players competed. Check out the crosstable.

FM Chumachenko Reigns Supreme in Asheboro

FM Andrey Chumachenko of Matthews posted two wins and a draw to claim sole first place at the Asheboro Open 38 July 12. Chumachenko won $125 for his efforts. Scholastic player Kevin Huang of Charlotte was able to get the draw with the FM. In the Candidates Section, Grace Campbell of Statesville and Bryan Metoyer each posted 2.5/3.0 to share the top spot. Adam Holmes and Jay Goss both posted two wins and a draw to tie for the Top Section at the Durham Academy Master Trek 9 June 27. In other 8-player sections: Elliott Cartee and Ivan Kuznetsov tied at 2.5/3.0; Anish Kottu won his section outright with a 3-0 mark. Claire Burdick went a perfect 4-0 to grab her section. NM Chris Mabe took an early-round bye, but won four straight games to tie for first in the Open Section at the South Carolina Open June 27-29 in Greensville, S.C. In the Under 1400 Section, scholastic player Brittney DeWitt grabbed first place with a 4.5/5.0 score. Check out the crosstable.

NM Maurice Dana reeled off three wins to grab the Blackbeard Open 10 crown June 28 in Morehead City. A total of 11 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

NM Mabe Claims Reverse Angle; Scholastic Players Show Summer Strength

NM Chris Mabe reeled off three straight wins to claim first place in the Open Section at the Reverse Angle 8 June 21 at UNC Charlotte. In was a good weekend for scholastic players. In the Open Section, Statesville�s Will Campbell gained 68 ratings points with wins over two higher-rated players. He was defeated by Mabe in the final round.

In the Under 1800 Section, scholastic players David Spencer and Derek Zhang gained more than 100 ratings points each as they shared the top spot with a 2.5/3.0 score. In the Under 1400 Section, scholastic player Grace Campbell and Chuck Merz (adult) shared the top spot at 2.5/3.0. A total of  35 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Wofford Claims First Place At TACO 40 in Raleigh

Matthew Wofford posted a 3.5/4.0 score in the Open Section to win the Triangle Area Chess Open (TACO) June 14 in Raleigh. Wofford took home $140. In the Advanced Section, Haoqing Wang and Joshua Taylor tied for first with a 3.5/4.0 score � each winning $105. In the Intermediate Section, newcomer Dustin Bosch finished with a 4-0 mark to take first place and $130. A total of 37 players participated in the action. Check out the crosstable.

FM Simpson Goes 3-0 To Claim Asheboro Open Crown

FM Ron Simpson reeled off three straight wins to capture clear first in the Top Section of the Asheboro Open 37 June 7. Scholastic players Jonathon McNeill and Andrew Dejong were tied for second at 2.5/3.0. In the  Candidates Section, Grace Campbell went a perfect 3-0 for the top spot. Myers Dominates Open Section in CMSCA Class Tournament

A total of 126 players competed in the CMSCA Class Championships May 31 in Charlotte. In the Open Section, Dominique Myers went a perfect 3-0 for first place. In the Under 1500 Section, Robbie Broadbent went 3-0 to claim the top spot.

In the Under 1200 Section, Joseph Biernacki went 3.5/4.0 to claim first place. In the Under 1000 Section, Veronica Skoczek also went 3.5/4.0 to top first. Suraj Madiraju scored a perfect 5-0 to win the Under 850 Section. In the Under 650 Section, Navaneet Galagali took the top spot with a 4.5/5.0 score. In the Under 450 Section, Jarret Howard went 4.5/5.0 to claim first place. In the Under 300 Section, Je�Darius Carr, Kadeem Dixon, Xerxes Kitson-Mills and Todd Peoples tied for first with 4-1 scores. The Parents and Friends Section was won by Thomas Kozak with a perfect 3-0 score. Check out the crosstable.

NM Justin Daniel Storms the Crowd at Chicago Open

Former State Scholastic K-12 Champion NM Justin Daniel posted a stellar 6.0/7.0 score to tie for first place in the Under 2300 Section of the Chicago Open May 23-26.

Larry Williams reeled off three straight wins to claim top prize at the Two Knights Swiss in Fayetteville May 24. Check out the crosstable.

NM Craig Jones Claims TACO Crown in Raleigh

NM Craig Jones posted a perfect 4-0 score to claim the Open Section of the  TACO 39 May 24 in Raleigh. Jones scored $160 for his performance. William Campbell also went 4-0 to win the Advanced Section and win $130. Robert Jackson won the Intermediate Section with a 4-0 score and took home $105. A total of 33 players participated. NM Dana Goes 5-0 In Morehead City Sweep

NM Maurice Dana reeled off five straight wins to claim the top prize at the Queen Anne�s Revenge May 17-18 in Morehead City. Roger Sample was clear second at 3.5/5.0. A logjam of four players finished at 3.0/5.0: Eugene Davenport, Victor Beaman, David High and Yuval Shemesh. A total of 16 players participated. Check out the crosstable.  

Fredericks Takes Top Spot At Quark 7

South Carolina�s Gary Fredericks posted a perfect 3-0 mark to claim top prize of $60 at the Quark 7 May 17 in Charlotte. Six players participated in the action. Check out the crosstable.

Tarheel Players Finish Well At Elementary Nationals

North Carolina players turned in some fine performances at the 2008 National Bert Lerner Elementary Championship, May 9-11, in Pittsburgh. In the K-6 Chmpionship, Eric Noden went 5.5/7.0 to captured 13^th place. In the K-3 Championship, Aaron Balleisen also went 5.5/7.0 to take 9^th place. In the K-6 Under 1000, Jonathan Chen went 6.0/7.0 to grab fifth place. In the team standings, Park Road Montessori in Charlotte grabbed  sixth place in the K-6 Under 1000. Check out the results.

Embler, Joseph And Laing Tie At N.C. Class Scholastic

Three players went 4-0 to share first place at the N.C. Class High School Scholastic May 10 in Newton. Matt Embler, Jordan Joseph and unrated Christian Laing posted 4-0 results for first place. In the overall team event, Newton-Conover HS grabbed first place over West Caldwell HS. A total of 43 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Hearty Crowd Shows Up For Immaculata Swiss

A total of 62 players participated in the Immaculata Swiss May 3 in Hendersonville. Players were group in eight player sections for three rounds of G/75. Winning their sections at a perfect 3-0 were: FM Miles Ardaman, Reid Motter, Christopher Tavernier and Robert Melville. Robert Womack and John Bayne won their sections outright at 2/5/3.0. A total of 28 players competed at the Asheboro Open 36 May 3, with a total purse of $560. In the Championship Section, there was a logjam at the top with (pictured l-r) Andrew Dejong, Joseph Graves and Jonathon McNeill all going 2.5/3.0 to stake a claim to first place. Each took home $80. Master 7 Trek Draws A Crowd In Durham

A total of 42 players competed in the Durham Academy Master Trek 7 May 3. Participants were grouped in 8-player sections. Winning their sections outright with perfect scores were: Indira Puri, Jordan Baker, Akash Krishna and Chetan Somani. Yimo Chen Claims K-12 Section In Winston-Salem

A total of 44 players competed at the Spring 6 tournament in Winston-Salem April 26. In the K-12 Section, Yimo Chen posted a 3.5/4.0 score to claim first place. FMs Simpson And Chumachenko Tie At N.C. Invitational

FM Ron Simpson of Raleigh and FM Andrey Chumachenko of Matthews ruled the field at the 2008 North Carolina Invitational April 26-27 at UNC Charlotte. Both players defeated the other four players in the field � and drew with each other � to post a 4.5/5.0 score. Since the two had the same results against the same players, the tiebreaks could not decide a winner. Both took home $225 for first place. Other players in the field were: NM Chris Mabe of Charlotte, NM Craig Jones of Chapel Hill, NM Maurice Dana of Morehead City and NM Neal Harris of Edneyville.

Each year, the N.C. Invitational brings together the highest-rated players � who have been active in weekend tournaments around the state � for a round robin event. Check out the crosstable.

Paul King Grabs Two Knights Swiss Crown

Paul King posted a 2.5/3.0 score in G/90 to take the top prize at the Two Knights Swiss April 26 in Fayetteville. Larry Williams and Emil Mayev were second at 2.0/3.0. Six players participated. Crosstable coming soon.

Wheeless Grabs Another All Girls Title; Will Be Polgar Rep

Amelia Wheeless reeled off four straight wins to capture the All Girls Open April 26 in Matthews. With the win, Wheeless earned  the right to represent North Carolina at the GM Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls at Texas Tech in late July. This is the third time she has won or co-won the All Girls Open title. A record number of 32 girls participated. Check out the crosstable.

Ward Leads Durham Academy To Lofty Finish In Atlanta

Carl Ward of Durham Academy turned in a stellar performance at the High School Nationals, April 18-20, in Atlanta. Ward scored 6.0/7.0 in the K-12 Under 1600 section to place third in that field of 277 players. Ward was also able to lead his Durham Academy team to second place in the team competition. Almost 100 N.C. players competed in the overall event. Check out the results.

Russian School Breaks Out The Quad Squads

A total of 27 players participated in the Raleigh Russian School Scholastic Quads April 19. Quads winners included: Eric Noden, Daniel Su, Brian Wu, Connor Perry and Chandan Somani. In other quads, Iyan Battle, Martin Riedel, and Aditya  Puttigampali all went 2-1 to tie in one quad. Dani Chertock and Arkady Bilenkin were knotted in their quad. Check out the crosstable.

Masters Mabe and Noble Share Reverse Angle 7 Top Spot

NM Chris Mabe and NM Matt Noble posted two wins and a draw to claim first place in the Open Section at the Reverse Angle 7 April 19 at UNC Charlotte. The pair split the top pot of $135. Lovelace Shows No Love For Opponents In Asheboro

A total purse of $765 was awarded at the Asheboro Open 35 April 12. In the Top Section, Taylorsville�s Randy Lovelace stormed to a perfect 3-0 mark and grabbed $150 for his efforts. In the Candidates Section, William Campbell posted a 2.5/3.0 mark to claim first place and $150. In the Club section, Campbell�s sister, Grace Campbell, was a clean 3-0 to claim first place and also take home $150. A total of 34 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Novak Grabs Top Section At Durham Academy Master Trek 7

A total of 51 players competed in the Durham Academy Master Trek 7 April 5. Participants were grouped in 8-player sections. In the Top Section, James Matthew Novak went 2.5/3.0 for first place. Winning their sections outright with perfect scores were: Spencer Hallyburton, Ian Concannon and Claire Elizabeth Burdick. Fred Ward and Aaron Balleisen tied in their section at 2.5/3.0. FM Ronald Simpson demolished the competition going 4-0 to take the Open Section at TACO 38 in Raleigh April 5. He won $150 for his efforts. Zachary High gained a number of rating points by posted two wins and two draws to take second place and $75. McNeill Takes Border Battle Scholastic Match

North Carolina scholastic champion Jonathon McNeill edged South Carolina scholastic champion Michael Lauria, 1.5 to 0.5, in a two-game match April 5 in Charlotte. The event was part of the Border Battle Match between N.C. Champion Chris Mabe and S.C. Champ Timur Aliyev. That match stands 1-1 after two rounds.

Sara Walsh Washes Away The Competition In Morehead City

Sara Walsh turned in a perfect 3-0 mark to grab first place at the Blackbeard Open 9 March 29 in Morehead City. Walsh took home $150 for her efforts. NM Maurice Dana was clear second at 2.5/3.0 and won $75. A total of 14 players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Samuel Xin Goes 3-0 To Grab Fake Copper Blanket Crown

More than 100 players locked horns at Charlotte�s Fake Copper Blanket March 29 at East Mecklenburg High School. In the Top Section, Samuel Xin busted through the 2000 rating barrier with a clean 3-0 mark to take first place. In the Under 1800 Section, Vladimir Besirovic went 2.5/3.0 in G/75 to grab first place. In the Under 1400 Section, Thomas Spencer and Seth Taylor-Brill both went 3-0 to share first place.

Jay Goss Claims Top Section In Durham

Jay Goss scored two wins and a draw to claim the top section of the Durham Academy Master Trek event March 23 in Durham. Players were placed in 8-player sections for the event. NM Maurice Dana Claims Top Spot At TACO 37

NM Maurice Dana took the top spot at the TACO 37 in Raleigh March 15. Dana finished with 3.5 out of 4 points and took home $130 for his performance.  Adam Murtadza finished with a perfect 4-0 score and takes home $115 for his performance in the Under 1800 Section.  Benjamin McDonald continued his winning ways in the Under 1400 Section and won $80 for his perfect 4-0 performance. Todd Trower and Patrick McCartney each posted two wins and a draw to share first place at the  Quaker Steak 6 March 15 in Charlotte. Both players won $75 for their efforts. Three-Way Logjam At Top in Asheboro Open 34

A total of 27 players competed in the Asheboro Open 34 March 8. In the Top Section, there was a logjam for first with Matt Noble, Mark Gragg and Alexei Gorbounov all finishing at 2.5/3.0 to share first place. Jonathon McNeill Claims K-12 State Championship

Almost 500 players competed at the N.C. State Scholastic Championship, Feb. 22-24, at the Blake Hotel in Charlotte. In the K-12 Section, homeschooler Jonathon McNeill from Asheboro claimed first place with a 4.5/5.0 score in G/90. As the winner, McNeill earned a $1,500 college scholarship from the N.C. Chess Association. He also earned the right to represent the state at the GM Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions in August in Dallas.

In the K-8 Section, Eric Noden claimed clear first at 4.5/5.0. In the K-12 Under 1300 Section, Charlotte�s Kevin Blackwell went a perfect 5-0 to claim first place. In the K-8 Under 1000 Section, Kenny Xie took clear first with a perfect 7-0.

In the K-5 Section, Kevin Chen posted a 6.5/7.0 score in G/60 to claim sole first place. In the K-3 Section, Chad Moody and Justin Gonzales shared first place at 6.5/7.0. In the K-1 Section, Sam Ferguson posted a 6.5/7.0 score to take the top spot. Check out the crosstables.

In the Friday night State Scholastic Blitz Tournament, Charlotte's Joshua Mu took sole first with a 9.0/10 score.

Pohl, Christianson Tie For First At UNC Charlotte Tournament

A total of 63 players turned out at UNC Charlotte to compete in the Greater Charlotte Championship Feb. 16. In the Top Section, South Carolina�s Klaus Pohl and Wayne Christianson went a perfect 3-0 to share the top spot. Christianson defeated Pohl in a blitz playoff for the Queen City title. In the Middle Section, a three-way tie erupted between Gilbert Holmes, Colette Wheeless and Derek Smith at 2.5/3.0. In The Lower Section, Tim Champion and Andrew Turner went a perfect 3-0 to share first place. Check the crosstable.

A total of 49 players competed at the Durham Academy Master Trek Feb. 16. In the Top Section, Chapel Hill�s Jay Goss and Fayetteville�s Carter Benge shared the top spot at 2.0/3.0. In other sections: Tian-Shun Allan Jiang grabbed his section at 2.5/3.0; Jeffrey Zhou went 3-0 to claim his section; Anish Kottu went 4-0 to claim his section; and Daniel Finkelstein went 4-0 to take his section. Taylorsville�s Randy Lovelace and Boone�s Alex Cibotarica each posted two wins and a draw to claim a share of the top section at the Chess for Fun event in Hickory Feb. 16. Players were grouped into eight-player sections. In the Middle Section, Statesville�s William Campbell went a perfect 3-0 for first. Estey Leads U.S., Women Against Germany

Black Mountain�s Roselie Estey is the No. 2 female correspondence player in the U.S. She is leading a team of U.S. women into a match against Germany, which started a short time ago. The match is sanctioned by the International Correspondence Chess Federation.

Amelia Wheeless Wins K-12 Section in Kernersville Event

A total of 39 players competed in the WSSCA Winter 6 event Feb. 9 at East Forsyth Middle School in Kernersville. In the K-12 Section, Amelia Wheeless reeled off four wins in G/45 to claim first place. In the K-8 Section, Tennessee's Andrew Simonsen posted a 4-0 mark to finish first. In the combined K-3/K-5 Section, brother David Simonsen posted a 3.5/4.0 score to claim the top fifth grader title. Edwin Lin posted the same score to take home the top K-3 player. Simpson Takes A Bite Out Of The TACO Field In Raleigh

FM Ron Simpson kept us his winning ways as he reeled off four straight wins to claim the Triangle Area Chess Open (TACO) 36 Feb. 9 in Raleigh. Lev Zilberter was clear second at 3.0/4.0. In the Under 1800 Section, Victor Beaman and Matt Embler tied at 3.0/4.0 for first place.  In the Under 1425 Section, Gordon Ray was clear first at 4-0. Twenty-four players participated. GM Ivanov Grabs Sole First At Land Of The Sky

Almost 220 players competed in the Land of the Sky Jan. 25-27 in Asheville. In the Open Section,  GM Alexander Ivanov of Massachusetts posted a 4.5/5.0 score to grab sole first place. FM Ron Simpson of Raleigh tied for second place at 4.0/5.0. In the Under 2000 Section, there was a four-way tie at 4.5/5.0 with North Carolina players Thomas Paradis and Mark Gragg joined by Brian Polka of Pennsylvania and Praveen Sanjay of Georgia.

In the Under 1600 Section, North Carolina scholastic players Ben Blach and Robin Yopp were joined by Tennessee�s Benjamin Blair at 4.5/5.0 for first place. In the Under 1200 section, Charlotte�s Ean Kitchens went 4.5/5.0 to take sole first place. Check out the crosstable.

Scholastic Players Invade Mountain Island

Almost 50 players competed at the Mountain  Island Elementary School Tournament in Charlotte Jan. 26. Players were divided by rating into quads. Winning their quads outright were: Thomas McLean, Jared Kastelic,  Seth Thompson, Zachary Quek, Michael Gray, Zachary Rollins, Michael Little and Sadhana Suryadevara. Almost 60 players competed in eight-player sections at the Durham Academy Master Trek Tournament Jan. 19. Winning sections at a perfect 3-0 were: Nishanth Shah and Raghav Bansal. A total of 29 players ignored the snow to play in the Reverse Angle 5 Jan. 19 at the UNC Charlotte campus. In the Top Section, FM Andrey Chumachenko went a perfect 3-0 to claim first place. Large Crowd Of Players Compete At CMSCA Grade Championship

More than 200 players competed in the CMSCA Grade Championship Jan. 12 in Charlotte. Players competed by grade in four rounds of G/45. Check out the crosstable. The winners and co-winners were:

John Timmel and Alexei Gorbounov each finished with a 3.5/4 score to take first place in the Open Section at the Triangle Area Chess Open 35 Jan. 12 in Raleigh. TACO Scholastic Quads Draw 16 Players

A total of 16 players participated in the Triangle Area Chess Open Scholastic Quad Jan. 12 in Raleigh. Players were divided into four quads. Quad winners at 3-0 were: Karen Riedel, Daniel Su and Anish Kottu. Martin Riedel and Jineet Patel tied at 2-1 in the other quad. Check out the crosstable.

Taylor-Brill, Moore Tie For K-12 Crown At Pawndemonium

A total of 120 players raised the roof at the 19^th Pawndemonium Jan. 5 in Asheville. In the K-12 Section, Seth Taylor-Brill and Kenzie Moore tied for first at 4.0/5.0 Taylor-Brill got the nod on tiebreaks. In the K-8 Under 1000 Section, Eddie Wahler went a perfect 5-0 in G/45 to claim first place.  

In the K-5 Under 900 Section, David Simonsen went a perfect 6-0 in G/20 to take first place. In the K-3 Under 800 Section, Hunter March posted a 5.5/6.0 score to claim first place. Check out the crosstable.

NM Chris Mabe of Charlotte reeled off three straight wins to capture the Championship Section of the Asheboro Open 32 Jan. 5 in Asheboro. Mabe won $125 for his efforts. Tracy Callis finished clear second at 2.5/3.0. In the Candidates Section, John Sailer posted three wins to go a perfect 3-0 and grab the top spot.
