Simpson, Patrick Tie For First At TACO 34

A total of 24 players competed in the TACO 34 Dec. 15 in Raleigh. FM Ronald Simpson and NM Vann Alan Patrick tied for first in the Open Section with 2.5/3.0 and each took home $98.  Eugene Davenport and Joshua Taylor tied for first in the Under 1800 Section with 2.5/3.0 and took home $83 each.  In the Under 1400 section, Benjamin McDonald and Emil Mayev finished in a tie for first with the same 2.5/3.0 score and took home $75 each. Large Crowd Turns Out For Southern Scholastic

More than 350 players competed in the 20^th Annual Southern Scholastic Dec. 15-16 in Charlotte. In the K-12 Section, Frank Mu, Kevin Huang and Samuel Xin all finished at 4.5/5.0 to share the top spot. Mu got the nod on tiebreaks.

In the K-8 Section, there was another logjam with Joshua Mu, Andrew Dejong, Drew Clary, Chang Sun and James Novak all deadlocked at 4.5/5.0. Mu got the nod on tiebreaks. In the K-5 Section, Ken Chu and Ethan Hollandsworth were 5-0 to share the top spot. Chu got the nod on tiebreaks.

In the K-3 Section, Jefferson Patrell and Noah Quesnel both went 5-0 to tie for first. Patrell got the nod on tiebreaks. Check out the crosstable.

Lovelace, Cibotarica Go 4-0 To Share First Place In Lenoir

A total of 28 players competed at the 2007 Holiday Foothills Chess Tournament in Lenoir Dec. 15. Taylorsville�s Randy Lovelace and Boone�s Alex Cibotarica both went 4-0 to claim the top spot. There were a number of players at 3-1: North Wilkesboro's Chad Eller, Taylorsville's Dennis Davidson, Johnson City�s John Simonsen, Whittier�s Brian Moore and West Caldwell HS�s Matt Embler. Patrick McCartney Grabs Top Spot At Quaker Steak 5

Patrick McCartney of Stallings posted two wins and a draw to grab first place at the Quaker Steak 5 Dec. 15 in Charlotte. McCartney won $80 for his efforts. Slobodan Sinanovic was clear second at 2-1. Eight players participated in the action. Check out the crosstable.

Cary Students Place High At National K-12 Championships

Cary�s Colin Zhu, a kindergarten student at Morrisville Elementary School, posted a stellar 6.0/7.0 to share first place in the Kindergarten Section of the National K-12 Scholastic Championship, Dec. 7-9, in Houston. Zhu placed second on tiebreaks. Classmate Sam Ferguson placed ninth in the First Grade Section. Check out the results.

Schessler, King and Williams Tie In Fayetteville

There was a logjam for first at the Two Knights Swiss Dec. 1 in Fayetteville. Greg Schessler, Paul King and Larry Williams all went 2.0/3.0 in three rounds of G/90 to share first place. Six players competed. Crosstable coming soon.

Zilberter and Taylor Share Top Spot at RAG25 In Raleigh

A total of 19 players showed up for the RAG25 tournament Dec. 1 in Raleigh. In the Upper Section, Lev Zilberter and Joshua Taylor went 3-1 in four rounds of G/25 to share the top spot. The two won $30 each. In the Lower Section, Daniel Su was a perfect 4-0 and won $40. He edged out his father, second-place Jack Su, for the win. Check out the crosstable.

Jay Goss Grabs Top Section At Durham�s Master Trek

Chapel Hill�s Jay Goss posted two wins and a draw to capture the Top Section of the Durham Academy Master Trek Nov. 24. Students competed in eight-player sections. Other section winners were: Calvin Deng, Charles Higgins, Dalton Xue, Yuting Chen, Christo Shin. A total of 53 players competed. Check out the crosstable.

Connor Labean Claims Championship Section In Durham

More than 150 players competed in the Durham Academy Fall Chess Challenge Nov. 17. In the Championship Section, Connor Labean went 3-0 to claim first place. In the K-12 Under 1400, Aaron Balleisen posted a 3.5/4.0 mark for the top spot. In The K-12 Under 1100, Praveen Suthaharan and Dalton He went 4-0 to share first place.

In the K-5 Section, Cheri Agner went a perfect 4-0 to claim first place. In The K-3 Section, Karen Riedel and Max Finkelstein each went 4-0 for first place. In the K-1 Section, Zachary William Saun Hunter went 4-0 to take the top spot. Check out the crosstable.

Big Crowd of More Than 200 Compete in Charlotte

More than 200 players competed in the CMSCA Junior Open at West Charlotte HS Nov. 17. Sections were divided by ages, with numerous players going 3-0 in three rounds of G/60. In the 8 and Under, Jay Pakala, Joshua Holcombe, Avery Feagans, Jayden Feagans and Alan Xie all went 3-0. In the 10 and Under, John Xia, Ethan Hollandsworth, Justin Yang, Aaron Murphy, Andrew Whitlock and Raymon Wang went 3-0.

In the 12 and Under, J.P. Flynn and Bendict Liu went 3-0. In the 16 and Under, Zachary Templeton, Robin Yopp, David Spencer, Andrew Dejong and Kenzie Moore went 3-0. In the Under 18, Robbie Broadbent and Ken Chu went 3-0. In the 21 and Under, Dominique Myers, Michael Lauria and Peter Giannatos went 2.0/3.0. Check out the crosstable.

Shawn McIntosh Rolls To 3-0 Mark To Take TACO Crown

Cary�s Shawn McIntosh stormed to a perfect 3-0 mark to claim the top prize at the Triangle Area Chess Open (TACO) Nov. 17 in Raleigh. Matt Embler and William Campbell Tie For Top Honor In Newton

A total of 17 players competed in the Western N.C. Regional High School Scholastic Nov. 17 at Newton-Conover HS. West Caldwell�s Matt Embler and Statesville homeschooler William Campbell tied for top individual honors at 3.5/4.0. In the team race, West Caldwell HS edged out Newton-Conover HS for top overall honor. Check out the crosstable.

Christ School Captures K-12 Team Crown In Fletcher

A total of 120 players competed in the Western North Carolina Team Challenge Nov. 10 in Fletcher. In the K-12 Section, the team from Christ School (Matt Horwitz, Harry Batt, Alex Swendsen and Dylan Morris) took top honors. In the K-8 Section, R.C. Edwards from South Carolina (Zachary Templeton, Jonathan Sarasua, Arjun Grover and John Custer) came in first.

In the K-5 Section, Hendersonville Elementary (Patrick Tobacco, Deiontrae Lawrence, Noah Pellman and Ariel Shefsky) and Veritas Christian Academy (Coleman Enloe, Kyle Tamaray, Annah Prelaz, and Macy Hrncir) tied for first. In K-3, Veritas Christian Academy (Chad Moody, Michael Enloe, Joshua Gilpin and Dathan Witherspoon) took the top spot. Crosstable coming soon.

FM Simpson Has Perfect 3-0 Day In Asheboro

FM Ron Simpson of Raleigh posted a spotless 3-0 score to capture the Championship Section of the Asheboro Open 30 Nov. 10. Simpson pocketed $125 for his efforts. Fayetteville�s Paul King was clear second at 2.5/3.0. In the Candidates Section,  Bryan Metoyer went a clean 3-0 to claim the top spot. William Campbell and William Haigler finished tied for second. NM Chris Mabe State Champ; More Than 150 Players Compete At N.C. Open

NM Chris Mabe of Charlotte is the new North Carolina chess champion. Mabe finished with a 4.0/5.0 result at the N.C. Open, Nov. 2-4, to claim the title. Mabe tied with NM Rusty Potter of Virginia at the tournament. Both players won $505. Check out photos from the event.

In the Under 2000 Section:  David Noden and Michael Mc Hale tied for first with 4.0/5.0 scores and took home $325 each. In the Under 1800 Section:  Lev Zilberter, Matt Helfst, and James Takagi tied for first with 4.0/5.0 scores and took home $252. In the Under 1600 Section:  Dru Knox finished with a score of 4.5/5 to take first and win $433.

In the Under 1400 Section, Alfred Rucienski finished in first with a perfect 5-0 score and won $356. In the Under 1200 Section:  Kevin Chen and Seth Taylor-Brill finished in a tie for first with a 4.0/5.0 score and took home $240 each. In the scholastic tournament on Nov. 3, Praveen Suthaharan won the K-12 title with a 4-0 score. In the K-6 Section, there was a logjam with Martin Reidel, Daniel Su and Shouri Gottiparthi all finishing at 3.5/4.0 Gottiparthi got the nod on tiebreaks. Check out the crosstable.

Cobras Wrap Up Season With Win Over Tennessee

The Carolina Cobras wrapped up the 2007 season with 4.5 wins and 5.5 losses in the U.S. Chess League. The Cobras wrapped up the season with a win over Tennessee. Hillsborough�s John Timmel posted a quick win for the Cobras. UNC Chapel Hill student Adam Holmes followed with a draw � the same for Raleigh�s Udayan Bapat. NM Craig Jones secured the team win by battling for a draw versus IM Ron Burnett, who was up two pawns in the end. Check out these games.

Gorbounov, Dana Claim First Place At TACO 32

Alexei Gorbounov and NM Maurice Dana each posted a 2.5/3.0 result to claim a share of the top prize at the Triangle Area Chess Open 32 Oct. 27 in Raleigh. Each won $90 for their efforts.

In the Under 1800 Section, Gary Maltzman, Salil Saxena and Victor Beaman all posted a 2.5/3.0 score to tie for the top spot. FM Andrey Chumachenko of Matthews posted four wins and a draw to share the top prize at the South Carolina Championships Oct. 26-28 in Columbia, SC. Check out the crosstable.

Jay Goss Grabs Master Trek Top Section in Durham

Jay Goss posted a 2.5/3.0 score to capture the Top Section of the Durham Academy Master Trek Oct. 20 in Durham. Players were group by rating in eight-player sections � playing three rounds of G/60.

Dejong Brothers and Sailer Rule At 64 Squares

Andrew Dejong from Chapel Hill posted a 3.5/4.0 score to grab the K-12 Section at the 64 Squares scholastic tournament in Winston-Salem Sept. 29. More than 70 players got into the action at the Fake Copper Blanket Aug. 25 in Charlotte. In the Open Section, Kevin Huang and Tanner Hogue posted a 2.5/3.0 score to claim a share of first place. In the Under 1800 Section, J.P. Flynn and Randy Wheeless posted the same score in G/75 to share the top spot.

FM Ron Simpson went 3-0 in the Top Section to win his second straight Triangle Area Chess Open (TACO) Aug. 18 in Raleigh. Simpson won $160 for his efforts.

North Carolina players did well at the Southwest Virginia Open, Aug. 10-12, in Roanoke, Va. In the Open Section FM Andrey Chumachenko and NM Chris Mabe were part of a four-way tie for first with 4.0/5.0.

Forty-Two Players Join The Action At RAPA 1

A total of 42 players participated in the day-long RAPA 1 Aug. 11 in Raleigh. In the Open Section, FM Ron Simpson won his six-player section with a perfect 3-0 score. Other section winners at 3-0 were: Eric Noden, Habtom Amare Amde and Ricky Sabhikhi. Check out the crosstable.

NM Dana Wins The Loot At Blackbeard Open 7

NM Maurice Dana reeled off three straight wins to claim the top prize at the Blackbeard Open 7 Aug. 4 in Morehead City. Seventeen players participated. Check out the crosstable.

Amelia Wheeless Ties For Third At Polgar; Frank Mu Goes 3-3 At Denker

North Carolina's reps finished with a combined 7.5-4.5 score at the two top scholastic invitational tournaments in Cherry Hill, N.J., July 29 through Aug. 3.

In the GM Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls, Charlotte�s Amelia Wheeless finished with a 4.5-1.5 score to tie for third � and place fifth on tiebreaks in a field of 49 players. Wheeless won the state�s All Girls Open in Matthews in April to earn the right to play in the tournament.

In the GM Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions, Charlotte�s Frank Mu battled a rugged field to post a 3-3 score. Mu won the K-12 Open Section at the North Carolina State Scholastic Championship in Durham in February to earn his spot in the 51-player field. Check out the crosstables (not in tiebreak order).

Callis Goes 3-0 To Take Two Knights Swiss Title

Nelson Lopez II Captures TACO 29 Top Section in Raleigh

A total of 48 players competed in the TACO 29 July 21 in Raleigh. In the Open Section, Denker champ Nelson Lopez II grabbed first place with a 3-0 score � winning $170. NM Carlito Agner finished in second at 2.5/3.0.  

In the Under 1725 Section, Charles Yu takes took first place with a 3-0 result. In the Under 1450 Section, Shaina Race was the champ as she posted a 3-0 result. In the Under 1100 Section, Brian Thorstad and Zhao Cheng tied for first with perfect 3-0 scores. Check out the crosstable.

Three-Way Tie At The Top Highlights Asheboro Open

A total of 37 players competed in the Asheboro Open 26 July 14. In the Top Section, Thomas Paradis, Jacob Parrish and Zakir Ahmed all tied for first place with a 2.5/3.0 score. Chris Mabe Comes Home Big Winner At World Open

NM Chris Mabe of Charlotte was the big winner at the World Open June 30 through July 4 outside of Philadelphia. Mabe posted a sterling 8.0/9.0 score in the Under 2200 Section to take sole first place. Unlike many other sections that had multiple winners, Mabe was one of the few to win his section outright -- taking home a cool $14,000! Another good finish was turned in by FM Matthew Hoekstra of Charlotte, who tied for sixth/ninth in the Under 2400 Section. Connor Labean of Durham tied for fourth/ninth in the Under 1600 Section. IM Jonathan Schroer Grabs Share Of First At Emory Tournament in Atlanta

There was a logjam for first place in the Open Section of the Emory Castle Grand Prix June 22-24 in Atlanta. IM Jonathan Schroer of Apex managed to grab a share of the top prize. The rest of the crowd wasn�t too bad either: GM Julio Becerra, GM Gregory Serper, IM Emory Tate, IM Ron Burnett and William Stewart of Georgia all tied for first. Check out the crosstable.

Horwitz, Xin Tie For Top Section In Charlotte

A total of 52 players participated at the Occam�s Razor 1 in Charlotte May 26. Players were divided into 8-player sections for three rounds of G/60. In the Top Section, Hendersonville�s Matthew Horwitz and Concord's Samuel Xin each posted 2.5/3.0 to share the top spot.

Those winning their sections outright and pocketing $50: Amelia Wheeless, Derek Zhang and Jayden Feagans. In other sections: Anand Singh and Kent Wheeless tied for the top spot in their section; Victor Martinez and Trevor Kastelic tied for first in their section. Check out the crosstable.

A total of 29 players participated in the TACO 27 in Raleigh May 19. In the Open Section, NM Craig Jones went a perfect 4-0 to claim the top spot and $160. Chuang, Joseph and Wheeless Go 4-0 At High School Class Tourney

Kevin Chuang of Hibriten HS, Jordan Joseph of Newton-Conover HS and Charlotte Homeschooler Amelia Wheeless each reeled off four straight wins to take top honors at the N.C. Ivens, Hudson and Williams Tie in Asheboro Open

A three-way tie for first place in the Championship Section highlighted the Asheboro Open 24 May 12. Ken Ivens, Jonathan Hudson, and Larry Williams all finished with 2.5/3.0 to share the crown. A total of 73 players competed in the Buncombe County Scholastic Championship May 5 in Arden. In the K-12 Section, Matthew Horwitz went a perfect 4-0 to claim the top spot. Zachary Templeton was the top K-8 player. In the K-5 Section, Alvin Zhang claimed the top spot at 4-0. In the K-3 Section, Adam Lee Jones and Coleman Enloe both went 4-0 to share the top prize. A total of 57 players competed in the WSSCA�s Spring 5 April 28 in Winston-Salem. In the K-12 Section, David Stamper and Michael Gmeiner tied at 3.0/4.0. Stamper got the nod on tiebreaks. A total of 74 players invaded Hendersonville to compete in the Immaculata Swiss April 28. Players were sorted by rating into 8-player sections for three rounds of G/75. Winners in their respective sections: Matthew Noble, Joshua Mu, Vlad Besirovic, Victor Suich, Adams Nager, Reid Motter, Chris Borges, Bradley Caswell, Walker Mims and Felipe Seivert. Wheeless Wins All Girls Open; Headed to Polgar Invitational

Charlotte�s Amelia Wheeless went a perfect 4-0 to capture sole first at the 3^rd Annual All Girls Open in Matthews April 28. Kelsey Kitchens grabbed sole second at 3.5/4.0. Emily Dehority took the Unrated Section at 3.5/4.0. A total of 24 players participated.

For winning, Wheeless earned the right to represent the state at the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls this summer in Cherry Hill, N.J. This will be her second trip to the tournament � placing tenth overall in 2005. Check out the crosstable.

Chumachenko Grabs N.C. Invitational Crown

FM Andrey Chumachenko of Matthews, the state�s highest-rated player, displayed his talents April 21-22 as he rolled to the N.C. Invitational title at UNC Charlotte. Chumachenko posted a 4.5/5.0 result � with a draw to FM Ron Simpson the only blemish on his weekend. Chumachenko pocketed $300 for his efforts. Simpson grabbed sole second during the weekend � going 3.5/5.0 and winning $150.

The N.C. Invitational brings together six of the highest-rated, active players for a two-day round robin. Rounding out the field were: NM Maurice Dana of Morehead City, NM Vann Alan Patrick of Raleigh, NM Chris Mabe of Charlotte and Expert Todd Trower of Charlotte. Check out the crosstable.

The father and son team of David and Eric Noden of Cary provided a 1-2 punch at the TACO 26 in Raleigh April 21. Myers Grabs Share Of Under 1200 Crown in in KC

Charlotte�s Dominique Myers reeled off a stellar score of 6.5/7.0 to capture a share of first place in the Under 1200 Section of the National High School Championships, April 13-15, in Kansas City. There were 310 players in Myers� section.

In the Championship Section, Charlotte�s Matt Greene was the top North Carolina finisher at 5.0/7.0 for a tie for 30^th place. There were 375 players in the top section. Check out the crosstable.

A total of 24 players competed in the Reverse Angle 2 April 7 at UNC Charlotte. In the Top Section, Chris Mabe reeled off three wins to grab sole first place and pocket $100. A total of 20 players joined the action at the Triangle Area Chess Open 25 March 24 in Raleigh. In the Open Section, Greensboro�s Jacob Parrish went a perfect 4-0 to grab first place. Almost 100 players competed at the Fake Copper Blanket March 24 at Vance High School in Charlotte. In the Open Section, Charlotte�s Todd Trower posted a 2.5/3.0 score in G/75 to grab first place.

In the Under 1800 Section, Peter Giannatos, Chang Sun and Lenoir�s Mark Gragg, went 2.5/3.0 to share the top spot. In the Under 1400 Section, Ulugbek Ergashev went a perfect 3-0 to take the top spot. In the Under 1200 Section, Dennis Kitchens went 2.5/3.0 to finish in first place. GM Jaan Ehlvest Takes U.S. Masters Title

Some of the best players from around the world competed in the U.S. Masters Championship March 10-18 in Hendersonville. GM Jaan Ehlvest captured clear first going 7.5/9.0. FM Ron Simpson was the top North Carolina finisher � going 5.0/9.0. Check out the crosstable.

FM Ray Robson, 12, was the talk of the tournament when he drew Ehlvest in the third round.  He held onto a share of the lead until the sixth round when he lost to FM Kazim Gulamali of Georgia; and dropped to fifth place after a loss to Faik Aleskerov of Azerbaijan in the eighth round.

In the Sub-Masters, Hendersonville�s Matthew Horwitz went a blistering 8.0/9.0 to take first place in the Under 2200 Section. Concord�s Samuel Xin was clear second. In the Under 1600, Chapel Hill�s David High scored clear first with 8.0/9.0. Check out the crosstable.

Gary Newsom Picks Up First At Asheboro Open 22

Twenty-two players fought it out at the Asheboro Open 22 March 3. In the Championship Section, Gary Newsom continued his winning ways as he went a perfect 3-0 in G/75 for first place. Adam Holmes was clear second at 2.5/3.0. In the Candidates Section, David High went 3-0 to claim the top prize. Ian Haigler was cleared second at 2.5/3.0. Check out the crosstable.

Frank Mu Claims State K-12 Scholastic Crown In Durham 

About 480 players from around the state converged on Durham for the N.C. State Scholastic Championship Feb. 24-25. In the K-12 Open Section, Charlotte�s Frank Mu from the N.C. School and Science and Math in Durham posted a 4.5/5.0 result in G/90 to claim sole first place. He earned a $1,500 college scholarship and the right to represent North Carolina at the Denker Tournament of High School Champions this summer in New Jersey.  

In the K-3 Section, Aaron Balleisen of Club Boulevard Elementary of Durham went a perfect 7-0 in G/60 to take first place. In the K-5 Section, Eric Noden of Fred A. Olds Elementary in Raleigh finished with a 6.5/7.0 score to claim sole first. 

In the K-8 Open Section, Samuel Xin of Harris Road Middle School in Concord went a perfect 5-0 for first place. In the K-12 Under 1300, Ashraf Azihan from Vance High School in Charlotte went a perfect 5-0 to take first place.

There was a five-way tie for first in the K-8 Under 1000. Jack Munley and Christopher Munley of J.M. Robinson Middle School in Charlotte, Thomas McLean of Community House Middle School in Charlotte, Brittney DeWitt of Trinity Homeschool and Tejas Sundaresan of Ligon Middle School in Raleigh were declared co-champions in the event. In the blitz tournament on Feb. 23, Jay Goss of Chapel Hill HS went 9.0/10 to claim the state crown.

Adam Holmes Wins Championship Section In Durham

Almost 170 players participated in the Durham Academy Winter Scholastic Feb. 17. In the Championship Section, Adam Holmes took first place with a clean 3-0 mark. In the K-12 Under 1400, Hiroki Wakiya was 3.5/4.0 for first place. In the K-12 Under 1100, Alan Lindsey, Chiraayu Gosrani, David Sailer and Jordan Baker were all knotted at 3.5/4.0.

More than 225 players converged on the prestigious Land of the Sky Jan. 26-28 in Asheville. GMs Alexander Ivanov and Sergey Kudrin each posted a 4.5/5.0 score in the Open Section to share first place. In the Amateur Section, Chapel Hill's Adam Holmes and South Carolina's Roger Johnson posted a 4.5/5.0 score to share first place.

Almost 250 Players Vie For CMSCA Grade Championships

A total of 245 players competed Jan. 20 at the CMSCA Grade Championships at Vance High School in Charlotte. Winners were crowned in individual grade sections.

Winner and co-winners were: Adam Holmes, combined 10^th, 11^th and 12^th grades; Michael Love and David High, 9^th grade; Gage Hibner, 8^th grade; Samuel Xin, 7^th grade; Joshua Horwitz and Marc Tafari, 6^th grade; Derek Zhang, 5^th grade; Nicole Spencer and Aaron Thomas Murphy, 4^th grade; George Nicholas Hawk, 3^rd grade; Adam Watkins, 2^nd grade; and Ethan Sevigny, combined 1^st grade and Kindergarten. Class Winners Crowned As 150 Players Invade Cary

Almost 150 players battled in out at the Davis Drive 4 Scholastic Tournament Jan. 13 in Cary. There were many class sections with individual winners. In the Championship Section, Nishanth Shah (1327) went 3-0 for first. In the Under 1350 Section, Rodney Folz went 3-0 for first place.

In the Under 1200, Paul Weiner went 3-1 to win on tiebreaks over Caroline Folz, Gabriel Gloss, and Alex Chappell. In the Under 1000, Calvin Deng was a perfect 4-0. In the Under 800, Yiyang He took first place.

In the Under 600, Ryan Terpolilli took first on tiebreaks over Kevin Zen. In the Under 400, Vincent Xia won on tiebreaks over James London and Aaron DeJong. In the Under 400 unrated Tejas Sundaresan won on tiebreaks over his brother Rishi. In the Under 250, Jerry Wu won on tiebreaks over Brandon Ross.
